[ this is coming after a brawl. he's full of adrenaline, probably has some darkening bruises and a gash on his eyebrow. not that it matters. he's not texting her because he's injured, it's because she's on his mind and he used a few of the moves she taught him. ]
[ at first, allison doesn't know how she feels about this. concerned, that ben's obviously been in this fight club, a little mad he didn't take her with him, touched he'd really think about her enough to want to text to afterwards, maybe a little excited... ]
[It begins with a text, but Scott doesn't mean to keep it that way. It feels important to do this himself, to make sure she doesn't see his network post as the first time she knows he's here.]
Hey. It's Scott.
[That's actually a message he retyped like six times. After a few seconds of fumbling, he switches the device over to voice, which is neat. It's nice that these work the way they do.]
Um—sorry. It didn't feel right to talk to you that way. In fact, this still feels pretty strange. But I wanted to let you know that I'm here.
You probably already know, right? Lydia came by and let me know how everything works here. There's a lot that gets left out when you first show up.
[Like Allison being here. Like Allison having to learn (and then proceed to worry) about her future. Scott knows that he has to keep calm, to keep his voice from cracking. He doesn't want her to hear the pain in it.
And really, there isn't that much. He knows who he's talking to. It's Allison.]
I'm glad to know that you're here. There's probably a lot that you wanna ask about. That you wanna know about. I guess this is my way of saying that I'm ready.
[They never did get that one talk, did they? Scott knows that now, they never will. Everything is changed. It's the future now, and he's steadily striding toward his senior year.]
So—whenever you wanna talk. Or meet. Or whatever. I'm ready.
[Scott has to leave it there. He almost utters these words: I missed you. And that's not a terribly fair thing to end on, especially since he doesn't know how long she's known about anything. He hadn't thought to ask.]
[ it's not like she hasn't been waiting for this. each month when new faces appear up on the network, a small part of her have always been waiting for one. one person, one face, one echo in the message system.
but when she hears it, allison pauses. she doesn't really know what's she's supposed to do, now that scott's here. what she's supposed to say. she gets the line of messages and she gets what scott is trying to say but she freezes. ]
[ but then it does hit her. he knows. he knows and he's talked to lydia, and allison feels out of the loop all over again. it's not his fault, it's not anyone's fault, but allison feels her jaw and chest tighten.
it's not his fault.
allison tries to put it into perspective. tries to stop herself from falling back down that untrusting hole. she's been working on fixing things with lydia, has been trying not to feel that same way towards isaac, and it's not fair that scott can just show up and allison just. wants it all to be okay. ]
When did you get here? [ it's an attempt at a pleasant conversation, a chance for this to be something less tense than allison knows it's going to be.
but even as she says it, it feels stupid. like she's trying to be something she's not. scott just showed up, scott - who knows too, who must have lived through that too - asking if she wants to talk. giving her the chance to make the decision. ]
[She wanted to tell her as soon as she'd talked to him, but she doesn't think that just texting Allison is the best way to tell her that Scott is here. She sees that he's on the network, so maybe Allison's seen that - maybe it'll be easier than everything else has been lately. She gets back to the apartment, though and it's empty. It's possible that Allison is off running an errand or maybe Scott used the info that she gave him and they're already talking.
Rather than just sit around and wait to see if this turns into something else that she's screwed up between the two of them, she sends her a text.]
Hey - I just got back to the apartment so I could tell you Scott's here - but you're not here, so hopefully he's already messaged you. I gave him all your info, since I didn't think the cuddlr app was the right forum for a hello.
When you get back, I'd like to talk. But if you'd rather me not be here when you get back - just let me know.
[ it's after she's talked to scott that she finally checks her messages, sees the blinking notification from lydia. she feels bad, more guilty than anything. guilty for how she can't even look at her best friend anymore, and after talking to scott, after getting that all out...
she's tired. emotionally exhausted. she's hiding at ben's apartment because it's one of the few places she really has that calms her down. she feels stupid, for how worked up about this. for how highschool she feels. lydia texts her and allison reads over it a few times before she can really put herself together to respond (despite how she doesn't want to, despite how she wants to hide it away and ignore it). ]
I already talked to him. Thanks for telling him I was here.
And it's your apartment, Lydia. If anything, I'm the one you should be kicking out. But I'd like to talk about all of this too. Please be there when I get back?
[Lydia hadn't meant to imply that she'd move out, but more that she'd give Allison some space or privacy if she needed to be alone after talking to Scott. She knows how overwhelming everything must be and she doesn't want to force her into dealing with it at any pace other than one she's comfortable with.]
Of course, I'll be here whenever you're ready to talk.
He is. So is Derek. Also I'm not sure if you've spoken to Malia - but Peter is her biological father. It's a very complicated family tree. Malia referred to him as a crazy serial killer - just to give you her frame of reference.
Hi. Um, it's me. Isaac. But I guess you could probably figure that out on your own. Uh, I don't know if you're just busy or maybe you're not ready to talk -- and that's fine. I get it. I do. I just... I wanted to check in. See how you were doing. [ He exhales noisily. ] I'm sorry, I'm not really good at this sort of thing. Uh... Anyway. I'm here. For whenever you wanna talk. Okay I hope you're having a good day. Bye.
[ the truth was, she's been busy. keeping herself busy, yes, but still busy. moving, constantly, in hopes that maybe she'll just be too tired to think about anything else. what she realizes now, and what settles thick and heavy in her gut, is that guilty realization that in her movement she's kind of...forgotten someone.
too wrapped up in her own drama to really think about anyone.
which is why she shoots him a text, moments after she hears the voicemail. allison doesn't really understand why she's nervous, but at the same time, there was something in his voice that has her...not worrie,d but something. ]
hey sorry I didn't pick up are you busy right now?
[ The fact that he received a response is promising, especially one that came so soon. Isaac had been prepared to wait in agony for days (or maybe longer). ]
Not really. I just got done at work so I'm walking home.
